How a Septic System Works

If you live in a rural area that is not connected to a sewer system, you depend on a septic system to treat your wastewater. But do you really understand what it does? Here is an overview of how a septic system works.

  1. Water exits your house from the main drainage pipe into the underground septic tank. Solid waste settles at the bottom of the tank, while oil and grease float to the top. The liquid wastewater (also known as effluent) then drains out of the tank and into the drain field.

  2. The drain field is a shallow, covered, soil absorption field. Pipes direct the wastewater onto the field’s porous surfaces, allowing the wastewater to percolate into the soil.

  3. As the wastewater filters through the soil, beneficial bacteria remove harmful organic material and microorganisms. The wastewater continues down through the soil, eventually entering a groundwater aquifer to restore the water supply.
