6 Warning Signs of a Defective Septic System

One day, you might notice that there is just something that isn't right about your home. It is always a good idea to follow that hunch because there might be a good reason, such as a septic tank that is almost full or has become damaged.

If you don't know enough about your septic system, here are some signs to look out for that suggest your septic system is defective.

Increased Moisture in the Drainage Field
Often, one of the first places to fail is the drainage field. Vegetation near the drainage field begins to grow and thrive. This is the result of the sewage water, which is nutrient-rich, fertilizing the soil. Increased moisture also contributes to the growth of vegetation near the drainage field. The nutrients may even lead to algae forming in a body of water nearby.

Gurgling Noises
Your pipes may begin to make gurgling noises. The noise will become audible when you run the water or flush the toilet. This is a sign that the tank is full and needs to be pumped. The gurgling results from the septic tank being too full of solids and not being able to function properly. Also, the gurgling noises can be the result of a septic drain field failure.

An Awful Smell
A terrible odor is one of the most common things that you will notice when your septic tank is failing. If you smell sewage anywhere on your property, this is a sign that you have a problem. A common odor is the smell of rotten eggs. The good news is that we can smell hydrogen sulfur long before it reaches toxic levels. But this still means that you should have the problem corrected as soon as possible because it can make you sick and can even be deadly.

Also, because of the danger of the septic gases, it is important to never enter your septic tank.

Toilet and Drain Issues
You may notice that the toilet won't flush or is slow to flush. It's best to turn to the plunger initially. But if the toilet just won't flush, the problem might be stemming from your septic tank being too full. A similar issue is when your sink or bathtub drain just won't drain.

Your Water Is Backing Up
One of the worst events is when water backs up into your home. Even worse is when sewage backs up. During these events, your septic system is likely failing and it is time to call for help.

If the water is backing up, it is important to check the septic system absorption field. This will allow you to identify if there are any other warning signs of a septic system failure and to rule out other causes, such as a clog.

Standing Water
There may be puddles of standing water across your property. The water will likely be smelly and will be a health hazard. Horrible diseases can be spread by waste, such as dysentery.

Products that are used around the home that are often flushed down the drain which can be bad for the environment. For these reasons, it is important to have your septic system repaired or replaced as soon as possible. There are some problems that can be easy to fix. But there are other problems that will simply cause more damage over time if they are not fixed quickly.
